Bullying has lifelong effects.
People who experienced bullying in childhood usually suffer from it for the rest of their lives. Investing early in mental health improves quality of life in the long term. Mobile self-esteem training for children affected by bullying makes therapy more accessible and improves care.

CONFIDENCE is developing an interactive system to strengthen self-esteem and reduce the experience of bullying in children between eight and twelve years old. Therapeutic and socio-technical approaches work hand in hand: everyday sensors record behaviour and physiological signals, from which AI generates personalised training content.
Socially interactive agents deliver this content to the children as sparring partners and coaches. Pilot studies test the technology for feasibility, effectiveness and everyday practicality — underpinned by expert knowledge and AI-based data processing.
Socially interactive agents for children.
As a project partner, Charamel contributes the socially interactive agents that meet the children as coaches. The consortium is coordinated by DFKI (Cognitive Assistants research department); further partners are Saarland University, the University of Augsburg and pioneo GmbH. The project is part of the BMBF funding programme GamKi.
